ECMWF-AUX 005: The state variable fields contain terrain-following artifacts

The height fields for the ECMWF and reference CloudSat data are specified as Above Ground Level (AGL) to eliminate missing data when the CloudSat bins are below the surrounding ECMWF grid points. To eliminate this problem, the height fields need to be referenced to Mean Sea Level (MSL) and extrapolated to fill in missing data below the ECMWF grid points.

Planned resolution: Fix in version 006 for R02

ECMWF-AUX 007: Artifacts in vertical profiles of temperature, specific humidity, and ozone

An error in the reduction of 91 ECMWF layers to 60 layers results in oscillations or artifacts in the vertical profile of temperature, specific humidity, and ozone. The affect on temperature is small at about +/- 0.5 K, however applications that use temperature differences between levels (for example the 2B-FLXHR heating rate calculation) can exhibit amplified errors. As a result, the 2B-FLXHR product for R03 uses a corrected beta version of the ECMWF-AUX product as input, not the current version 007.

Planned resolution: Fix in R04

ECMWF-AUX 007: Height field is an array (nbin, nray), but could be a vector (nbin)

The height field is calculated as an ideal grid with bin 105 set at 0 meters MSL and the other bin heights calculated with the range bin size. By doing this, each profile has the same height values. Therefore the first profile's height values can be applied to every profile. Changing this field to a single vector representing the bin heights would decrease the size of the uncompressed ECMWF-AUX file.

Planned resolution: TBD
